Cricket returned to the North Staffs and South Cheshire League today. We round up the results from todays 1st and 2nd XI game.
Today was the start of the competitive cricket season in the North Staffs and South Cheshire League. Leek 1st XI hosted Stone SP and the 2nd XI travelled to Caverswall.
It was always going to be a strange day, with many rule changes and reduced overs matches but everyone was glad to return to normality and play some cricket.
Leek CC 1st XI vs Stone SP 1st XI - Game Abandoned (with play)
Leek 1st XI - 127/8 off 25 overs (9 Points)
Stone SP - No second innings (7 Points)
The 1st XI game had been rained affected but play began at 3pm with each team facing 25 overs each. Stone SP won the toss, and elected to field, this put Alex Mellor and Sam Slater into bat for Leek.
On his return to the club, Alex opened up with a score of 26 runs, top score in the Leek CC innings. The remainder of the side went onto to hit 127 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in the allotted 25 overs.
Unfortunately, due to the continued downpour, the match had to be abandoned. Due to the game having a 1st innings score, and zero overs being played in the second innings, both sides will receive 3 points plus bonus points.
As Leek hit 127 runs, they will receive 3 batting points, plus an additional 3 bonus points under the new rules for a run rate of over 5 runs per over, taking their total to 9 points for the game. Stone SP will receive 4 bonus points for their 8 wickets, taking their total to 7.

In another rained affected game, Leek CC travelled to Caverswall to play their 2nd XI in Division 5. Leek started quickly with Rory Corden taking 2 early wickets, leaving the home side just 16 for 2.
Craig Lancaster steadied the ship for the home side, and was the top scorer with 31 runs. There wasn't much that the rest of the Caverswall batting line up could do as Nick Bailey and returning Leek CC player Joel Bayley tore through the rest of the batsmen, taking 4 wickets and 3 wickets respectively.
Leek opened up with Dan Hunt and Kieran Carr. After the quick wicket of Dan Hunt, Kieran Carr and Captain Mat Nicholls formed a partnership scoring 54 runs before Mat was caught by Barker, bowled Lancaster. Kieran Carr finished the job alongside Joel Bayley, scoring a total of 30 runs from just 36 balls.

There was some highlight cards to give out in the 2nd XI, these are for bowlers that take 3 or more wickets and batsman getting 30+ runs. Shout outs this week go to Joel Bayley, Nick Bailey and Kieran Carr.
