Leek Cricket Club have secured the signing of Bangladesh Test opener Shamsur Rahman.

We have been busy over the Winter adding to the 1st XI squad, with signings Zen Malik, Lewis Moulton, Tom Moulton, Ross Dearden and Rory Haydon.

Today we announce our latest signing Shamsur Rahman who makes the switch from Burslem for the 2024 season. Rahman, who plays his cricket for Dhaka Metropolis, has played six Test matches for Bangladesh.

Club Captain Alex Mellor said "I am delighted to bring the experience of Shamsur in to match up with our youthful side. He has played with and against some of the world’s best and having watched him for a while, is still performing at a very high level. He will provide some great experience and hopefully help develop our players along the way. I’m really excited to watch him at Highfield this season."

He made his debut in January 2014 against Sri Lanka and made his sole Test century by compiling 106 against the same opponents in Chattogram the following month. His last Test appearance came the same year against Zimbabwe.

Rahman has also represented Bangladesh in one-day internationals and Twenty20 matches - and boasts an impressive first-class record. The right-hander has scored more than 8,500 runs, hitting 20 centuries with a top score of 267. He has also accrued 4,508 List A runs and more than 1,700 runs in the T20 format.

In 2023, Rahman played 21 times for Burslem, scoring 474 runs with a top score of 73*. We spoke to our Head of Cricket Committee, Rob Haydon who said, "we are delighted to welcome Shamsur to the club."

"He brings with him considerable first-class experience having played international cricket in all formats in the past and currently still playing and performing in the Bangladesh Premier League. He also has experience of the league and will add runs to our already bolstered batting line up. He also offers another dimension with the ball. We are pleased to add Shamsur to complete our active winter in the market and add some valuable quality and experience to a young and energetic squad."

Welcome to Leek Cricket Club, Shamsur.
